Dublin Airport’s traffic issues are due to outdated road access, but Metro Dublin and Island Rail can resolve this by connecting the airport to key areas, improving accessibility and reducing congestion.

The capacity challenge at Dublin Airport is less about air traffic and more about inadequate road access. The airport's connectivity is hindered by an outdated cross junction and a perpetually congested roundabout that links to the motorway. These access points were identified for upgrades over 15 years ago, but the necessary improvements have yet to materialise, leaving the airport struggling with traffic flow and accessibility issues that impact its overall efficiency.

Dublin Airport's capacity issues are further compounded by the absence of a rail connection, leaving passengers reliant on congested roads. However, major rail projects like Metro Dublin and Island Rail have the potential to significantly transform airport accessibility. Metro Dublin, once completed, will provide a direct, efficient link between the airport and the city, reducing road congestion and offering a faster alternative for the average person. Island Rail can complement this by connecting regional areas to the airport, creating a comprehensive rail network that drastically improves connectivity and eases traffic pressure around the airport. These projects could be game-changers for Dublin Airport's long-term infrastructure.
